Web links can be criticalLinks

According to surveys, links are the second most effective way to promote your site after search engines, almost equal in importance. To decide where you would like to place your links, you have to think like your clients. In which types of sites would they be interested? After making this determination, you need to contact the owners of those sites and tell them why you would like a link placed on their site. Most times, site owners will request that you place a reciprocal link on your site.

Some links are simply a help to your clientele. If you are a beach resort, for example, perhaps you would include links to nearby shops, restaurants, and charter boats as well as perhaps the current weather and surf conditions at the beach. If you are a member of the Better Business Bureau or other professional organizations, consider adding a link to/from their sites.

It is not wise to place external links on your home page. Why do you want to send them away when they just got there? Be prepared for this and have a page available just for links.
